An Ikorodu based political youth group, Youths of Ikorodu Division Youth PVC Mobilisation Volunteers under the auspices of the Ikorodu Division Not Too Young To Run Movement has concluded a process of collecting over 600 signatures of residents of Ikorodu division for a petition exercise to compel the Lagos state INEC Electoral Commissioner to decentralize its PVC registration exercise in Ikorodu division of Lagos State.
The group, led by Samson Bisiriyu has successfully mobilized residents of the community, across the Ikorodu local government and five local council development areas to append their signatures to a petition to be forwarded to the state headquarters of the INEC. The petition, we gathered is meant to compel the electoral body to decentralize the PVC registration exercise, in order to reduce the stress currently being faced by residents in a bid to register and obtain their PVCs.
Speaking to Ikorodu Oga Radio, Samson Bisiriyu, brain behind the initiative stressed that, the current practice of INEC where registration centres are rotated among the one local government and five LCDAs of Ikorodu division was unacceptable and should be changed to permanent registration centres in each of these LGA / LCDAs in order to reduce the challenges and man-hour lost by residents to the exercise.
‘What we intend to achieve is for INEC to create permanent registration centres in all the local government and local council development areas across Ikorodu division, to make it easy for residents living far away from the present INEC office in Ikorodu to register and collect their PVC, he said.
Bisiriyu added that, ‘though, we had a target of 500 signatures, as a way of giving credibility to the petition and to convince INEC that our people are indeed the ones clamouring for the change in approach. But, surprisingly we have collected over 600 signatures as at the last count.
Some of those who have so far appended their signatures to the petition includes, Hon Babajimi Benson, member representing Ikorodu federal constituency at the House of Representatives, Hon Saka Solaja, member, representing Ikorodu Constituency 2 at the House of Assembly and Otunba Ganiyu Olusegun Abiru, Chairman, IKODASS and an aspirant for the Lagos East Senatorial Seat, whose group Team GOA-4-Senate 2019 recently hosted a 1-Million Man-March PVC awareness Campaign for residents of the division.
Other signatories include all Ikorodu Local government chairman and LCDA chairmen. Secretary to local government and local council development areas have also signed the petition.
