INEC BRINGS PCV REGISTRATION EXERCISE TO IKORODU TOWN HALL, TO COMMENCE REGISTRATION ON WEEKENDS AND ON PUBLIC HOLIDAYS

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC may have succumbed to pressures mounted upon it by stakeholders across Ikorodu division for the decentralization of the registration exercise, as the body recently announced its decision to bring the Continuous Voter’s Registration exercise to the Ikorodu town hall.

This decision may not be unconnected with agitations from different quarters of the community about the difficulties being experienced by residents, in their bid to register at the INEC office situated within the Ikorodu GRA where residents are usually locked outside by the estate management and are made to trek a distance of 2 to 3 kilometers before they can carry out their civic obligation.

The one-week INEC registration exercise will run between Friday, 20th July to Wednesday, 1st August, 2018. Similarly, the electoral body has also announced that, starting from August 1st, 2018, it will conduct registration exercise on weekends and on public holidays, as a way of giving opportunity to more Nigerians to register for the exercise.

It will be recalled that, a group of Ikorodu division youths, under the aegis of Ikorodu Division Volunteers collected about 600 signatures to back its petition to the INEC headquarters in Lagos, compelling the body to decentralize its registration exercise in the division.

Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu.
