The general belief that government alone cannot provide all the infrastructures needed to build a virile society came to the fore on Thursday, 20th September, 2018 when the Government College, Ikorodu Old Students Association, UK Chapter (GCIOSA-UK) donated a total of fifty (50) computer sets and two (2) Interactive white boards to their alma mater, at an event witnessed by Lagos State Government officials, Senior management staffs and students of the school.
The gesture, according to Dr Mrs Remi Kayode, former president of the UK Chapter and Chairman, Project Committee of the association, was in continuation of the association’s commitment towards giving back to the school that gave them sound academic foundation and as a way of supporting infrastructural provision for the public schools in Nigeria.
She noted that the donation of the computer systems and interactive white boards was in tandem with the global digital trend and the need to position students to match their peers in terms of digital technology.
‘We have decided to go the route of donating 50 sets of computers and two (2) Interactive White Board (IWB) to afford students of public schools the opportunity of catching up with the dynamic digital world’.
She added that, the body had in the past embarked on other developmental projects, meant to uplift the school. They include the refurbishment of bathrooms and toilets in both hostels, provision of water tanks, refurbishment of the dining hall and provision of furniture, fans among others.
Admonishing the students, Dr Kayode enjoined them to take full advantage of the computers and interactive boards and ensure they make use of them wisely.
Mr Orunsolu, representative of the Director, Science and Technology, Lagos State Ministry of Education admonished the school management to make good use of the facility as a Classroom for teaching the students but not a mere museum of computers.
Speaking on behalf of the school management, Mr Bayo Afuwape, Principal Government Junior Model College, Ikorodu assured the donors of adequate maintenance of Computer sets and interactive boards. Like Oliver Twist, he also seized the opportunity to request for more support from the old students association, in the area of school benches, laboratory and, possibly school bus.
Giving the vote of thanks on behalf of the school, Mrs Oyesanya , Acting Principal, Government College Senior Model College, who could not hide her joy and excitement, commended the old Students for investing their collective fortunes on the laudable charity project for the upliftment of the school. She also commended Dr Remi Kayode for her commitment to the delivery of the items to the school, since the project was initiated six months ago.
Earlier, Mr Abiodun Oni, a senior officer from the district performed the formal commissioning of the computers and interactive boards on behalf of the Tutor-General / Permanent Secretary of Education District 2, Lagos State.
Speaking on behalf of the students, Elizabeth Adekule, an S.S 2 student gave profound gratitude to God, the school management and, in particular, the old students for the kind gesture. She also assured the donors of efficient and effective use of the items.
As part of the activities for the handing-over and commissioning of the computer sets and interactive white boards, the Old Students Association also presented an award of recognition to the immediate past principal of the school, Mr Excellence Olugbenga Amodu for his support to the association while he served as the Principal of the School.
