Few hours to the much anticipated Nigeria’s presidential and national assembly elections, ‘Say No To Electoral Violence’ team, a group of young residents of Ikorodu under the aegis of ‘No To Electoral Violence’, NEVR said it has identified Ikorodu Division as a hotspot for electoral violence in the state.
The body made this known at the palace of the Ayangburen of Ikorodu, Oba Kabir Adewale Shotobi when the team paid a courtesy visit to the paramount ruler of Ikorodu division, as part of the body’s efforts towards ensuring a violence free 2019 general elections, particularly in Ikorodu division.
Mr Oluwafemi John Adebayo, Communication Officer for the project said ‘the need for data recording on electoral violence is for peace-keeping and peace-keeping interventions when needed’. He added that the report helps in monitoring electoral violence and to take necessary steps in areas that are hotspots for electoral violence.
Speaking on the importance of the visit, Mr Oluwafemi urged the monarch to use his good office and influence as the paramount ruler of Ikorodu division to curb any likelihood of violence in the division during the forthcoming elections.
Responding, Oba Shotobi expressed his faith in democracy and good governance. He appealed to all stakeholders, particularly the politicians to follow due process. He also assured his visitors that he would do everything possible to maintain peace in his domain before, during and after the forthcoming elections in his domain.
Oba Shotobi added that, the Lagos State Government has put measures in place to curb violence, through wealth creation, employment opportunities and many more.
To demonstrate his commitment to a violent-free elections, Oba Shotobi joined the NEVR team, led by Samson Bisiriyu to display the ‘Say No To Electoral Violence’ placard.
