COMMUNITY SERVICE CHALLENGE: SAGAB COLLEGE STUDENTS EMBARK ON STREET, DRAINAGE CLEANING EXERCISE

SS 2 students of Sagab College, Solomade Ikorodu left the comfort of their classrooms and school environment on Thursday 9th May, to engage in community service initiative to its host community- Solomade and Ikorodu town in general. Not even the early morning showers could stop the young students from giving back to their host community- Solomade, Ikorodu.

The Community Service initiative, conceived by the SS 2 students of the school, we gathered was part of the school’s way of connecting with its host community and to serve as a platform for adding positive value to the community.

The community service, according to the school management was part of the school’s community service project, as part of requirements for participating in the Coaches and Champions Community Challenge initiative, among 10 schools across Ikorodu division.

Speaking to Ikorodu Oga Radio, Aderogba Olaitan, Coordinator, Coaches and Champions, a youth development and leadership body disclosed that the community service challenge was conceived to make the students practice some of the positive nation building values they have been taught in the past leadership conferences organized by the NGO.

‘The Community Service Challenge is a programme designed to promote patriotism and youth participation in community development.  It also serves as an avenue for schools to connect with their host community by positioning the school and its students as nation builders’, said Aderogba Olaitan, Convener of the challenge.

According to Olaitan, winner of the #C&CServiceChallenge will receive the Coaches & Champions Awards at the organisation’s leadership conference, slated for November, 2019.

Speaking in the same vein, Dr Mrs Beauty Obodo, Proprietress Sagab College revealed that the students chose the community cleaning exercise by themselves. She added that all efforts to convince them to pick simpler project proved abortive. She commended the organisers of the challenge for the initiative, stressing that it will remain a memorable experience for her students.

Meanwhile, some of the students that participated in the community cleaning exercise have expressed joy and fulfillment for the opportunity of giving back to the community, through the cleaning exercise.

Olaniyi Glory, Head boy, Sagab College Ikorodu noted that, ‘’It is necessary to impact your community positively and this can only be done by going out to do something that will be of great benefit to them. You cannot affect your community positively by remaining within the four walls of your school’.
