The protracted LASPOTECH Management and Staff Union crisis has claimed its first major victim, following the death of one Mr Sunday Owolabi who was until his death a staff of the institution. The news of his unfortunate death was announced via social media,
Colleagues of the late LASPOTECH Staff have pointed accusing fingers at the Samuel Sogunro led Management of the Lagos State Polytechnic, Ikorodu for culpability in the untimely and unfortunate death of the late LASPOTECH Staff.
“It’s with heavy heart that the NON TEACHING STAFF OF LAGOS STATE PLOTECHNIC announce the passing away of MR OWOLABI SUNDAY, one of the LASPOTECH 38 sent to prison for no just reason.
“He had been on the sick bed with series of drug prescriptions since returning from IKOYI PRISON as a result an EXECUTIVE ORDER from the government masterminded by LASPOTECH MANAGMENT HEADED BY TYRANIC RECTOR IN PERSON OF MR SAMUEL SOGUNRO. It is very unfortunate to receive the sad news early hours of today.
“We know the Management of LASPOTECH will be so glad that one of the UNION LEADERS is dead now as a result of THE TORTURE AND MALTREATMENT METED OUT TO THEM BY PAID PRISONERS AT IKOYI PRISON”.
The union alleged that late Owolabi died as a result of the torture and maltreatment meted out to him and others at the prison where they were kept.
It will be recalled that the LASPOTECH NASU members were arrested in the early hours of Thursday, July 11,2019 for shutting down activities at the LASPOTECH, Ikorodu Campus. They were first detained at the Shagamu road police station in Ikorodu before being taken to Panti where they were said to have been interrogated and arraigned before a Magistrate Court.
In an SMS message sent to Ikorodu Oga Radio, Mr Lanre Kuye, Deputy Registrar, Public Affairs, Lagos State Polytechnic has however denied the allegation of Management’s involvement on the death of the late unionist.
He further stated that, ‘we commiserate with the family of our late colleague’.
Though, the Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwoolu has promised to constitute a visitation panel on the LASPOTECH crisis, not much has been heard about the inauguration of the panel, about two weeks since he made the promise.
It is hoped that the LASG will do the needful in order to avoid more causalities from the protracted crisis.
