Residents of Ikorodu local government have been urged to adhere strictly to the on-going lockdown directive of the state as directed by the Federal government of Nigeria, as part of measures to combat the ravaging scourge of Covid-19 disease in the State.

This advise was given by the Executive Chairman of Ikorodu Local Government, Hon Wasiu Adeshina during the distribution of the council’s Covid-19 relief materials to residents of the area on Thursday, 9th April at the local government secretariat in Ikorodu.

Adeshina spoke against the backdrop of pictures of over 50 residents doing aerobics and exercise on the Ikorodu-Lagos road on Tuesday. The pictures which was circulated on social media has generated negative backslash as it was a clear violation of the 14-day stay-at-home order in the State.

While distributing the relief materials to the beneficiaries, Hon Adeshina noted that the exercise was aimed at complimenting the efforts of the State government, towards cushioning the effects of the 14-day lockdown on the aged and vulnerable members of the public.

‘What is happening today is a kind of support. While the lockdown is still on-going, our people should have something to eat. The local government, in support to the State government, we are giving out relief package to our people; the ward, CDC, Iyalojas, artisans, the youths and religious community in Ikorodu’, he said.

A total of 1, 500 food packs, containing spaghetti, semovita, wheat and noodles was delivered to representatives of the beneficiaries, this was done in line with the government directive against the gathering of more than 20 people during the lockdown period.

Alh Lukman Shonibare, Ikorodu LG CDC Chairman who received the food packs on behalf of the CDAs commended Hon Adeshina on the gesture to Ikorodu residents.

‘What is happening today is an indication that the Chairman wants to assist the less privileged and ensure that residents are happy. Today’s exercise is an indication that he loves what he is doing and the food packs has come at the right time to bring relief to our people’, he said.

Shonibare added that his leadership will ensure that the food relief gets to the right people that needs them, by employing the same measure used in distributing the Lagos state government emergency food relief to all the CDAs in the local government.

Speaking on behalf of the APC ward executives, the Ikorodu APC LG Chairman, Hon Taiwo Longe commended the local government initiative and assured of judicious distribution of the food relief to targeted beneficiaries.

‘The local government is complimenting the efforts of the State government. He is taking care of his own constituency, which is the party, since the State government has distributed relief materials to the CDAs. We have  many vulnerable people, widows and people who are desperately in need of these food packs within the party. They are the ones we have been asked to give the food packs to, and we will do just that’, he assured.
