The National Youth Council of Nigeria, Lagos State Chapter has rolled out its line up of programmes to mark this year’s celebration of the International Youth Day, slated to hold between 10th-15th August, 2020.
Details of the programmes was contained in a press statement, signed by the Lagos State NYCN Chairman, Comrade Billiamin Lekan Oba which was made available to newsmen in Lagos.
According to the statement, ‘the International Youth Day is an awareness day designated by the United Nations. The purpose of the day is to draw attention to a given set of cultural and social issues surrounding youths globally. It is observed on the 12th of August each year’.
‘The theme for this year’s International Youth day is “Youth Engagement for Global Action”. It seeks to highlight the ways and approach in which the engagement of young people at the local, national and global level is enriching national and multilateral institutions and process, as well as draw lessons on how their representation and engagement in formal institutional theatrics can be significantly enhanced’.
The statement further stated that ‘the National Youth ouncil of Nigeria, Lagos State Chapter is keyed to make the 2020 IYD more impactful by engaging the young citizens for global action as we curb the spread of COVID19 and to make our communities free from the deadly pandemic’.

*My COVID19 Impact Story -*
NYCN Lagos is changing the narratives of this year’s International Youth Day by identifying and celebrating young people that have helped their communities curb the spread of CoronaVirus. The efforts by youths between the ages of 18-35 will be received via the council’s official email and will be shared on the NYCN YouTube Channel, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram pages with the hashtag #covid19impactstory
‘This experience and pictorial/video shared will go through in-house Jury and Public jury to decide the most laudable COVID19 Impact project’, it added.
However, cash prizes will be shared among 3 winners from the State’s senatorial districts. The cash which will be expended on projects in their communities.
*Donation of 5000 NoseMask*
One of our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) will be the donation of 5000 nose masks to the Lagos Youth communities, particularly, secondary school students, who will be resuming for their examinations after a very long stay at home as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. This gesture will go a long way to showcase our alignment with the *#MaskUpLagos* policy by the Lagos State government.
The nose mask shall be distributed across the 3 Senatorial District in Lagos State.

The need to capture data of Lagos State Youths home-and-abroad and to align with the 21st century global reach prompted the website activation. The website will showcase the Youth activities in Lagos State.
*COVID19 Need2Know Webinar*
We have designed a webinar that will feature health professionals to discuss the dangers and best approach to curb the spread of the virus among our teeming Youths.
This webinar will as well, feature “My COVID19 Impact Story” participants to share their impactful story for the world to listen.
‘We at NYCN Lagos State Chapter dedicate this year’s International Youth day to honour of Late Tolulope Oluwatoyin Sarah Arotile; the first-ever female combat helicopter pilot in the Nigerian Air Force’, it concluded.
The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) was established in 1964 in Lagos. It is charged with policy formulation and implementation on issues bordering on youth development in Nigeria. It is the umbrella body and the mouthpiece of the Nigerian Youth.
It was established and given legal recognition in 1990. The NYCN has three branches, the National, Zonal and the State chapters. The NYCN is also affiliated to the World Assembly of Youth, Pan-African Youth Union. It has the Lagos State Ministry for Youth and Social Development as its supervisory body.
