Following public outcry and national media coverage generated by the mindless murder of innocent residents of Ikorodu community by the dreaded Badoo cult gang, the Inspector General of Police; Ibrahim Idris, has described the development as a slap to the police and community leaders in Ikorodu.
The IGP stated this at a meeting with Ikorodu Community Development Association, CDA and Community Development Council, CDC Chairmen and other officials, on Thursday, August 3rd, 2017, which held at Igbogbo Police Barracks, Igbogbo, Ikorodu.
Ibrahim Idris, who was represented at the meeting by Commander, Area N; Assistant Commissioner Gusau Ahmed, said the police cannot be everywhere and if he deployed more police officers to Ikorodu, the menace of badoo attacks in the community would continue unless the community leaders rise up to do proper community policing–the absence of which he said badoo members are exploring to kill and maim innocent people.
While speaking on how horrifying and embarrassing it has been for him to continue to see gory images of badoo victims on the social media every now and then, he recommended that every community should embrace native intelligence and educate the residents on the importance of knowing their neighbours and what they do for a living. The IGP, who further challenged the community leaders, said they should go home and ask themselves why is the menace ravaging Ikorodu alone and not any other part of the state.
Community leaders, who were given the platform to speak on security strategies adopted in their various communities and challenges, accused the police of divulging very sensitive information to criminals in some cases, an unprofessional act they said does not encourage collaborating with the police in crime fighting within the communities.
One of the community leaders, Alhaji Tunde Buhari, known as Baba Isale Eko, said the poor welfare of police officers also contributes to the inability of the men in uniform to effectively combat the badoo menace in the division. Some other community officials told the Inspector General of Police that the challenge of badoo in many ways has proven to be spiritual, hence, a spiritual approach would be more appropriate to tackle the situation.
