In commemoration of the 2024 annual Tree Planting exercise, the Executive Chairman of Ikorodu Local Government, Hon Wasiu Adeshina has urged all residents of Ikorodu Local Government area to collaborate with the government in preserving the environment for the future generations.
Adeshina made this appeal on Sunday, at Jamatul Islamiyyah Primary School, Sabo Ikorodu, venue of the exercise.
‘Today, we come together not only to create the beauty of nature but to contribute actively to its preservation and enhancement. Trees provide us with the oxygen we breathe, they offer shade, shelter and sustenance to countless species including humans’, he said.
‘As we gather today, it is our collective responsibility to continually plant trees and work towards a sustainable future. Each tree we plant today is a symbol of hope, a promise of greener and healthier tomorrow. Let us nurture these trees with care and watch them grow into mighty trees that will stand for years to come’, he added.
‘Positive change starts with us, by planting and monitoring trees, we are sowing the seeds for a better future’, he submitted.
Adesina also announced that the local government has prioritized education, initiating school debates in secondary schools, with plans to extend to primary schools next year.
He encouraged the Headmistress to focus on improving pupils’ vocabulary and public speaking skills as it was necessary to prepare them for the future.
Mr Hassan Oriyomi who represented the Honorable Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources …., stressed the importance of protecting the environment for future generations, highlighting the theme “Nurture Our Future.”
He noted that the rapid population growth in Lagos State has a significant impact on the environment, including drainage and canal blockage, affecting public health.
He said that the agency and ministry have responded with effective interventions, widely acknowledged by the residents and public.
He emphasized that tree planting was a vital component of environmental conservation, preventing soil erosion, air pollution, and releasing oxygen.
Mr. Oriyomi commended the Lagos State Parks and Garden Agency for their efforts in creating vibrant green spaces and enhancing residents’ quality of life.
He reiterated the ministry’s commitment to supporting tree planting and green initiatives, implementing policies and programs for environmental sustainability.
He concluded by urging every citizen to join the endeavor, planting at least one tree in their lifetime and nurturing it to contribute to a healthier, more sustainable Lagos.
In her brief remarks at the ceremony, Headmistress of Jamatul Islamiyyah Primary School, Mrs Ogunsusi Comfort acknowledged the importance of trees, citing the numerous benefits they provide, including oxygen.
She praised the Chairman’s thoughtful gesture and wished him continued strength and wisdom.
Also, Mr. Abimbola Olabode, the LASPARK Desk Officer for Ikorodu, emphasized the significance of the tree planting program.
He explained that the project aims to educate school children about the importance of trees and their benefits beyond aesthetics, including health advantages.
Mr. Olabode highlighted the crucial aspect of sustainability, stressing that planting trees is just the first step.
He emphasized the need for proper care and maintenance to ensure the trees’ growth and longevity.
To achieve this, he admonished the school management to take ownership of the planted trees, while assuring them that necessary support will be provided to ensure their sustenance, including watering and other essential care.
