IKORODU LG CHAIR, HON WASIU ADESHINA, WIFE, CHARGE RESIDENTS TO UNITE AGAINST TUBERCULOSIS

Ikorodu Local Government’s first couple, Hon Wasiu Adeshina and wife, Mrs Abolanle Adeshina have called on residents of the council area, both old and young to unite and fight the scourge of the deadly tuberculosis from taking roots in the area.

Mrs Abolanle Adeshina, Chairperson and wife of the Executive Chairman was the first to make the call today, during the official flag-off of the “End Tuberculosis in Ikorodu” campaign which held today at the Ayangburen market, Sabo.

The campaign which was organized under the auspices of the Office of the Lagos State First Lady, Mrs Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu is a statewide campaign.

It would be recalled that Mrs Adeshina was last week appointed by the First Lady as the Ambassador for the End T.B Campaign in Ikorodu Local Government.

Lending his support to that of his wife, Executive Chairman of Ikorodu Local Government, Hon Wasiu Adeshina appealed to residents to embrace the government’s free tuberculosis treatment by approaching government health facilities, for free screening and treatments, once they noticed symptoms relating to the deadly disease.

‘When you notice that you or any of your loved ones have coughed persistently for more than two weeks, it is important for the affected person to seek medical attention for early diagnosis to reduce the risk of transmitting the germs to others

Adeshina also appealed to residents to avoid stigmatizing patients of the disease.

‘Also stigmatization of people with tuberculosis kills faster than the disease. We don’t need to run away from tuberculosis patients, all they need at that point is care and love’, he explained.

‘Tuberculosis is a curable disease, as long as the patient takes his or her medications regularly, as prescribed, eats enough fruits and good food. Let us unite against TB. Let us prioritize health education and come together so as to eliminate TB in our community. Let’s provide hope and support to those affected and build a healthier and more resilient environment’.

Concluding, Adeshina expressed appreciation to the First Lady of Lagos State, Dr Mrs. Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu for appointing ambassadors across the state, while noting that the action was a major step in eradicating the killer disease tuberculosis in our society.

Earlier, in her speech Adeshina explained that the disease is a communicable disease that requires early detection and treatment to avert death.

According to experts,
Tuberculosis (TB) is caused by a bacteria (Mycobacterium tuberculosis) that most often affects the lungs. Tuberculosis is curable and preventable. TB is spread from one person to another through the air. When people with lung TB cough, sneeze or spit, they propel the TB germs into the air.

The campaign was graced by the Iyaloja-General of Ikorodu Division, Dcns Busola Isikalu, Iyaloja-General of Ikorodu Local Government, Mrs Bukola Osho and Iyaloja of Ayangburen Market, Sabo, Alh Ojulari respectively.

Chairman of the ruling party in Ikorodu Central, Alh Waheed Animashaun led other APC Chieftains to the event, while the Leader of the House, Hon. Adebola Adebowale led other Councilors to the flag-off ceremony.
